What types of cars are the most desirable to collectors?

This is a general question – not looking for specific models. Do collectors prefer convertibles or hard tops? Automatics or manual transmissions? If I bought a really cool car new and wanted to keep it for 20 years, what types are cars end up being the most valuable?

I am in the market for a new car, with around a $5000 budget. I want a good economy car, most likely a 4 cylinder, but I want it to be able to go fast when I want it to. For example, I have a friend who keeps talking up his Saab 900 turbo. What are some cars that get good mileage, but still have some power. This question was deleted the first time and I don’t know why, but it does not make me happy.
